The term retirement tends to provoke a spectrum of emotions and associations. Whether you are eagerly anticipating it, feeling apprehensive about it, or haven’t contemplated it yet, keep reading. This significant life transition can, in fact, be turned to your advantage!
What Are We Discussing?
Retirement can signify various things to different people. Here, we explore the transition from active employment to a newly embraced phase of life.
Five years ago, Colleen concluded her journey as a respiratory therapist and anesthesia assistant. Initially, she hesitated at the thought of quitting. After engaging in meaningful discussions with close friends, deep introspection, and allowing herself time to process, she came to understand that retirement was not merely about leaving work, but rather stepping into a new opportunity!
Change is on the Horizon!
The process of retirement can bring numerous changes, including:
- modifications in income and its sources
- shifts in job titles or career identities
- altered primary activities
- restructured daily routines
Simultaneously, you may notice the following changes:
- the transition of titles from middle-aged to senior
- the potential fading or weakening of social and support networks
- the aging body and slowed recovery time
- changes in family dynamics
It’s a lot to navigate all at once.
Contextual Overview
Retirement is a universal experience across societies. In Canada, the median retirement age stands at 63 for public sector employees and 67.8 for those who are self-employed. The current median age for retirement is notably higher compared to previous years, indicating that individuals are choosing to retire later in life.
Key Considerations
When contemplating retirement, financial aspects often dominate our thoughts. Equally significant are our physical and mental health along with our level of engagement with the world around us.
Physical Health
This could be an ideal moment to evaluate your health comprehensively. By receiving a physical examination and necessary follow-ups, you can gain clarity on health concerns to monitor and the most suitable exercise and nutrition strategies to adopt.
Incorporating nutritional supplements can greatly enhance a healthy lifestyle. By understanding your current health status and any existing health risks, you can select targeted supplements. The aim is to ensure that your health supports the activities you love, especially now that you have time to pursue them!
Mental Well-being
Mental health takes on greater significance as we age. Challenges commonly faced by older adults often stem from feelings of isolation, loneliness, and a perceived loss of purpose, potentially leading to higher risks of depression, substance misuse, anxiety, and undiagnosed dementia.
Many of these issues can be alleviated through proactive approaches. Engaging with trusted friends, seeking advice from a family physician, joining support networks, or pursuing counseling can make significant differences.
Social Engagement
Maintaining close friendships, engaging in social events, and obtaining cognitive stimulation are essential for quality living, especially when transitioning away from a professional environment. Keeping this aspect active enriches your days and boosts your overall well-being. Caring for a pet can also foster a feeling of connection and responsibility, adding to one’s sense of purpose.
Plan Proactively
Determine what is important to you and how you plan to achieve it. Colleen, while preparing for her retirement, pinpointed five elements that held the most significance for her:
- mental acuity
- physical, sexual, and nutritional health
- contributing to others and being of service
- staying updated and mentally stimulated
- enjoying the fruits of her labor
She then established priorities for her retirement and remained committed to them, even throughout the pandemic. Today, she embraces her retired life!
Embrace This Phase
Reflect on the potential benefits of this life stage. While challenges may arise, there are also unexpected rewards to be discovered.
- Stay grounded—if changes are on the horizon, choose to prepare for them rather than turning a blind eye.
- Identify possible challenges—develop effective strategies to navigate them.
- Acknowledge your wisdom—leverage it for personal gain and to help others.
Make a conscious effort to plan thoughtfully, act consistently, maintain connections, practice self-compassion, and remain open to surprises.
