Walking to school is a key component of an active lifestyle, yet many children are driven to school even when it’s just a short distance away. This October, let’s make a change with International Walk to School Month!
Encouraging children to stay active offers numerous health advantages, such as enhanced behavior, boosted self-confidence, and improved cognitive skills. Additionally, choosing to go without a car contributes positively to our environment.
The six objectives of International Walk to School Month include:
- Encouraging health through regular physical activity
- Increasing awareness of how walkable your community is (and identifying necessary improvements)
- Fostering a sense of environmental responsibility
- Reclaiming neighborhoods for pedestrians
- Alleviating traffic congestion around schools
- Creating opportunities to connect with parents, community leaders, and friends
Last year, over 40 nations participated in Walk to School Month—from Argentina to Uganda. Collaboration can involve public officials, school administrators, teachers, law enforcement, and parent organizations in the development and execution of a safe walking initiative. Given that walkable areas benefit everyone, the advantages are extensive.
When the month concludes, there’s no need to let those positive habits fade. Opting to walk to school (or work) can be a delightful and healthful choice.
So, what’s stopping you? Start walking today!
