Bears retreat into hibernation during the colder months, while numerous plant varieties undergo a dormant phase. Even hummingbirds reduce their activity levels. We can glean valuable insights from the ways of nature! As daylight diminishes and shadows lengthen, we have the opportunity to foster a sense of warmth, comfort, and serenity in our lives. Minor adjustments to our living spaces and daily practices can enhance our overall wellness.
Feeling Down?
Experiencing the blues during the fall and winter months is common. “For many, reduced sunlight can lead to an increase in depressive moods,” explains Glenda Wallace, MA, RCC. “Simply put, more sunshine boosts neurotransmitters, enhancing our mood, while more darkness leads to increased melatonin, which makes us feel sluggish and tired. This often results in behaviors like overeating, excessive sleeping, and decreased outdoor activity, creating a negative cycle.”
Wallace notes that reduced light can also affect our metabolism. “Your brain may send signals to conserve energy, leading to a slower metabolism and heightened hunger,” she adds.
A Wellness Foundation
Fortunately, there’s good news, according to Wallace: “By incorporating healthy habits into our daily routines, we can support our well-being.” She suggests the following strategies:
- Ensure daily exposure to sunlight (aim for at least 30 minutes), or consider using light therapy boxes that simulate sunlight.
- Participate in regular physical activity to release endorphins.
- Maintain a nutritious diet (and consult your healthcare provider about potential vitamin D supplements).
- Manage stress, potentially through therapy or medication.
- Establish a daily routine filled with enjoyable activities.
Creating Comfort
Alongside embracing healthy lifestyle choices, we can emulate the comfort-seeking behavior of hibernating bears by cultivating a warm and inviting environment. Here are some suggestions:
- Declutter, clean, and organize. For many of us, disorder can negatively impact mental well-being.
- Select calming colors for your decor. While personal preference plays a role, many find shades of green soothing, possibly due to their association with nature.
- Experiment with aromatherapy. Certain scents, such as lavender, can promote relaxation, while citrus fragrances may uplift your mood.
- Incorporate elements of nature, whether through indoor plants or collected pinecones.
- Create a cozy reading corner with fluffy blankets and a comfortable chair.
- Set up a coffee or tea station in your kitchen (consider hot chocolate for the kids!).
The Essence of Hygge
The Danish notion of hygge, signifying a sense of coziness, encourages individuals to savor the winter months filled with cold and darkness. “This approach prioritizes experiences that promote comfort, togetherness, and contentment,” notes Wallace. “One of my cherished wintertime rituals is creating a snug atmosphere with candles or a fireplace, inviting friends over for tea and heartfelt conversations.”
She emphasizes the importance of simplicity. “It involves recognizing the positive aspects of life and savoring the little joys of daily existence. Carving out time for yourself and your loved ones can foster calmness, alleviate stress, and enhance mood.”
