Presence over presents

  • Quality Time over Material Gifts

The onset of holiday shopping seems to creep up earlier each year, from eye-catching television ads to enticing in-store displays. This season, why not take a stand against rampant consumerism and celebrate the holidays on our own terms?

    Why Holiday Gifts Matter

There’s nothing inherently wrong with holiday presents! The joy of giving a carefully selected gift to someone special is priceless. Research indicates that gift-giving can enhance relationships and foster community bonds.

Nevertheless, societal pressures combined with aggressive marketing strategies during this season may induce feelings of guilt, anxiety, debt, and even harm the environment, as we often find ourselves compelled to give beyond our means—or what the planet can handle.

Add to this the stress of buying and wrapping gifts in time for the celebrations, and it can create a perfect storm of pressure. This year, let’s adopt the slow holiday movement, which encourages us to move away from overconsumption and toward meaningful giving.

    Foster New Traditions

    • Instead of rushing through a crowded mall in search of the ideal gift for your friend, enjoy a peaceful forest retreat together.
    • Rather than getting your mom yet another cashmere sweater, how about sharing the joy of cooking a beloved family recipe together?
    • What could be more delightful for your sister and her children than a lavish afternoon tea out with you?

These are instances of gifting time: experiences that enrich rather than exhaust. Other such gifts might include cooking a candlelit dinner, enjoying a couple’s massage, attending a concert, or simply spending the afternoon in a bookstore together. After all, spending time together is the ultimate luxury.

    Gift with Heart

While quality time with loved ones isn’t always feasible, there are meaningful non-material gifts that convey thoughtfulness beyond mere gift cards. Here are a few suggestions:

    • A donation towards educational expenses (from cash for an RESP fund to health education initiatives)
    • An opportunity to explore a new interest (like a class for ballet, pottery, or rock climbing)
    • A family experience (such as tickets to an art exhibit, aquarium, or adventure room)

    Gifts of Presence

Wondering what to give when you have nothing to wrap? For some on your holiday list (especially kids!), the thrill of unwrapping something tangible adds to the excitement. You can still honor the “presence over presents” philosophy by creatively packaging your non-material gifts:

    • Planning a beach getaway for the family? Wrap up water shoes and a new swimsuit with a letter detailing the adventure.
    • Gift your brother-in-law some guitar lessons? Include printed sheet music to add a personal touch.
    • Taking your energetic nephews on a nature trip? Surprise them with a Sasquatch-themed kids’ book, a pair of binoculars, and tell them you’ll be on the lookout for Sasquatch together.

    Go Beyond

As you discover the joy of meaningful gifts rather than excessive consumption, you may find other ways to incorporate the “presence over presents” mindset into your holiday celebrations. This could include opting for fabric wrapping, creating homemade decorations, or choosing a live tree.

Not only can you save money and contribute to a healthier planet, but you may also uncover fresh joy, whimsy, and purpose during the holiday season by aligning your giving with your values.
