  • The Dilemma of High Achievers

Not long ago, I pondered the idea that life ought to have an instructional guide, and I seemed to have missed out on mine! It felt like I had been thrust into a game without any rules or guidance to navigate it.

Over time, I realized that I was not the only one grappling with this uncertainty. Many of us construct an understanding of how we should lead our lives. Some have had the fortune of supportive environments that help cultivate skills and belief systems, while others glean knowledge from educational institutions, communities, and social media platforms. Regardless, we all find ourselves questioning whether we have overlooked something essential—if we were living life the right way, wouldn’t we experience happiness and fulfillment?

This reflection highlights a fundamental struggle in existence. Depending on our aspirations and how we pursue them, we might not always derive joy from life. Thankfully, there are approaches to develop our personal guide to living a more balanced and rewarding life.

    Your Destination

A vital component of your life manual is pinpointing your desired destination. Do you aspire to be:

    • content
    • financially secure
    • successful
    • well-respected

Once you clarify this, take time to reflect on its meaning:

    • How will I recognize when I’ve arrived?
    • What feelings will accompany my arrival?
    • What repercussions will my success have on those around me?

This may unveil a deeper aspiration. For instance, the allure of being well-respected could stem from a desire to create a “positive impact” on the world. Thus, your ultimate goal may truly be about making a positive difference, opening various alternative avenues to reach that aim.

    Navigating Competing Desires

Wishing to reach multiple destinations can complicate matters. You might seek a fulfilling career, a sense of adventure, and a joyful family life all at once! This often leads to needing to:

    • manage various responsibilities
    • set priorities
    • accept compromises, or
    • forfeit certain aspirations

Acknowledge the existence of potentially conflicting aspirations. It may be time for a reality check:

    • Which goals are most significant to me?
    • What can be paused or sacrificed?
    • What might be lacking in my pursuits?

    Fixing a Faulty GPS

What if you are aware of your goals but feel as though you’re heading in the wrong direction? Consider where things might be misaligned:

    • Is your vision of the desired destination vague?
    • Are you sidetracked by other options?
    • Are you silently waiting for external guidance?
    • Did you reach your aim yet feel a sense of disappointment?

Once you identify the source of the dysfunction, contemplate a course correction or even the possibility of charting a new path altogether!

    Guidelines for the Journey

An effective owner’s manual encompasses rules and troubleshooting tactics. Without these, we risk losing our way. Keep these guidelines in mind:

    • Establish boundaries: know your preferences and how to uphold what is significant to you.
    • Exercise agency: take ownership of your life, using discernment to assess external feedback.
    • Be open to change: if something isn’t working, explore different approaches.
    • Value the journey: understand that the process of progressing toward your goal is, in itself, your life.

    Your Customized Life Manual

These components should be weighed when redefining your interpretation of success and determining how to make choices aligned with your values. Maintain a sense of humor throughout—the journey feels lighter and richer with a broader perspective; it fosters a sense of connection, with more options emerging.
