The human brain plays a crucial role in our capacity for intelligence, processing emotions, triggering bodily movements, and governing behaviors. To navigate traumatic experiences, our brains employ various mechanisms, such as dissociation and memory recall, which can help us manage and survive these challenging moments.
However, in spite of its impressive adaptability, the brain can also inadvertently sustain behaviors associated with trauma long after the event has passed. We may resume our daily lives but persist in utilizing coping strategies tied to past traumas, which can negatively impact our relationships, job performance, and overall feelings of safety and wellness.
Achieving Brain Balance
For Indigenous communities, the brain is perceived as an integral component of a holistic system that encompasses the mind, body, spirit, and emotions.
Dr. Nicole Redvers, a naturopathic doctor and associate professor at Western University, along with her Deninu K’ue First Nation heritage, emphasizes, “The mind is contained within the head, which makes it distinct from the heart and spirit.”
“From the perspective of health and traditional medicine, maintaining a healthy and balanced mind space is essential for our overall wellness,” Redvers explains. In Indigenous traditions, “balance” reflects the interconnectedness within oneself, with others, and with the natural and spiritual realms.
This concept of balance resonates with Western views on brain health and mental wellness. An overstimulation from the parasympathetic nervous system can leave us feeling numb and disconnected, whereas excessive activation of the sympathetic nervous system can lead to anxiety and irritability. Fortunately, we can retrain our brain to react differently to the stresses of daily life.
Health Guidelines for Well-Being
The World Health Organization defines health as a complete state of physical, mental, and social well-being, not just the absence of disease.
For Indigenous populations, health and wellness intertwine with governance and legal frameworks. For instance, the Nehiyawak people in Alberta view health as a component of miyopimâtisiwin, which signifies leading a commendable life through cultural practices, understanding our duties to community and environment, and nurturing respectful relationships.
According to Redvers, Dene law also interrelates daily practices, cultural values, and legal principles. “We recognize that adequate sleep is vital for a healthy nervous system and brain recovery,” she points out, noting that Indigenous laws include mandates for nighttime rest and discourage sleeping during daylight hours.
“Another principle emphasizes maintaining a positive outlook and mindset, which is critical. Sharing knowledge and supporting one another is also fundamental, as assisting others can significantly contribute to overall mental wellness and mitigate issues like depression and anxiety,” she articulates.
Historical Indigenous lifestyles demanded substantial physical fitness, supported by a nutritious diet and practices like fasting, sweat lodges, and the use of medicinal herbs. “We possess remedies for stroke,” Redvers emphasizes.
Neuroscience of Healing
Infectious diseases, forced relocations, and residential school systems have contributed to elevated chronic health issues among Indigenous populations, leading to increased cases of dementia globally. However, Indigenous knowledge and traditional medicine may hold potential remedies for all.
“Inflammation has been linked to conditions like Alzheimer’s disease,” says Redvers. “I recently conducted a study in the U.S. focusing on a specific berry that shows promise in inhibiting inflammation-related gene expression. While we cannot alter our genes, we can influence how they are expressed.”
Engaging in cultural activities is essential for sustaining brain health and overall mental wellness. “Research indicates that intellectual pursuits such as reading or learning new languages are beneficial,” Redvers explains. “But what about crafts like beading or sewing? These activities keep our minds engaged and the neural pathways active.”
The Connection Between Brain Health and Planetary Well-Being
Issues such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution are disproportionately affecting populations that contribute minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Redvers argues that planetary health must be regarded as a critical factor of human health since the well-being of Indigenous populations ultimately influences the health of our planet and all its inhabitants.
