Strategize with Flexibility

Few can dispute the significance of perseverance in our lives. The determination to achieve success, unwavering commitment to a goal, and a resolute intention to continue despite obstacles, setbacks, or opposition are admirable qualities. However, there comes a time when holding steadfast to a plan may no longer yield results. This is where “The Pivot” comes into play.

Understanding the Pivot

Pivoting is the skill of acknowledging that the path you’ve invested considerable time and energy into is no longer the right one. This concept, much like a basketball technique of shifting one foot while keeping the other steady, is vital in the journey of life. A pivot enables us to remain anchored in our existing knowledge while making necessary adjustments to reach our goals successfully.

The Importance of Flexibility

The act of pivoting demands deep self-reflection, courage, and decisiveness. Often, we hesitate to pivot due to fear of judgment from friends and family, worrying they may perceive us as indecisive, quitting, or failing. Nonetheless, it’s essential to recognize that our initial plan, though valid at the start, may no longer be effective. Adjusting our strategy while remaining goal-focused fosters learning and growth. Thus, in addition to grit and determination, we should also encourage adaptability in our children.

Personal Reflection on Perseverance and Pivoting

I have always been more adept at perseverance than at pivoting. I hold strong beliefs and have long thought that greater effort would lead to positive outcomes. Yet, throughout my parenting of children now aged 18, 20, and 21, I have consistently encouraged them to plan ahead while remaining flexible enough to change direction. I tell them that while perseverance is commendable, being inflexible is not. I guide them to stay strong, confident, and resolute, but also to regularly reassess their strategies. This year, I am committing to taking my own advice and embracing “The Pivot” in my own life, looking forward to what this change in direction will mean for me both personally and professionally.
