Nourish Together: Combat Hunger with Family Dinners

By zp7op | Contributor

With busy daily routines and diverse dietary requirements, many families encounter the ongoing dilemma: “What should we have for dinner?” Meanwhile, millions of families struggle to consistently provide meals, affecting approximately 1 in 8 children, as reported by Feeding America.

You can lend a helping hand to those in need by participating in Safeway and Albertsons’ “Fight Hunger, Serve Hope” initiative – a program aimed at combating hunger in local communities during the summer months when families with school-aged children experience elevated food insecurity rates. For every O Organics® product purchased, the company’s private label will donate one meal, up to $7 million, which equates to 28 million meals. Contributions will be directed to Nourishing Neighbors, a program of Albertsons Companies Foundation, to finance grants focused on providing nutritious meals for at-risk youth during the summer.

“While summer brings joy to countless students, it also highlights the unfortunate reality that millions of children face when they lose access to the school meals they rely on throughout the academic year,” noted Jennifer Saenz, EVP and chief merchandising officer at Albertsons Companies. “As a company, we are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of children in need. For the first time, we are simplifying the process for our customers to support this mission by linking each purchase of our O Organics brand to hunger relief efforts in the communities we serve.”

After the campaign concludes, families eager to assist their communities can explore various opportunities to give back.

Contribute Canned Goods

Once the school year begins, many classrooms engage in canned food drives for different causes, serving a dual purpose: providing for those in need and teaching students the significance of giving back. Equipping your children with canned goods for school can impart the value of helping others and cultivate a sense of responsibility.

Volunteer at a Food Pantry

While donating food items helps communities, local food pantries also require enthusiastic volunteers to sort and distribute food, among other tasks. Volunteering can offer a unique perspective as you connect with fellow volunteers, enhance the lives of individuals in your community, and acquire new skills.
