**Eco-Friendly Development**
Watters Creek was created using sustainable techniques that embrace the area’s natural beauty. While the greenery of trees and grass is prominent, the development’s surroundings, shops, and restaurants have also prioritized eco-friendliness. The design focuses on conservation and maximizes open spaces, earning Watters Creek the title of the first retail project in Texas to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
**Sustainability Initiatives**
Beyond on-site recycling and the use of recycled materials in construction, Watters Creek has several sustainability initiatives:
– Buildings and parking garages are designed to rise upwards instead of spreading outward, conserving land.
– Well water is utilized for the pond, creek, and irrigation systems, while water-saving plumbing fixtures save approximately 1,000 gallons daily.
– The center uses ozone-friendly air conditioning units, and refillable water bottles can be filled with natural spring water at the Reuse-Refill-Refresh Station.
– Enhanced insulation and reflective rooftop materials contribute to energy conservation, with management estimating enough energy savings annually to power 30 homes for the same duration.
**Tree Preservation Efforts**
Tree preservation is a notable aspect of the Watters Creek development. Out of the 500 trees planted, over 24 mature trees were rescued from nearby projects. A significant highlight is a 150-year-old pecan tree near the pond, recognized as a historical landmark by the City of Allen.
**Commitment to Community**
In addition to its environmental emphasis, Watters Creek is dedicated to social responsibility. Parking is complimentary in the retail center’s three garages. However, all net proceeds from metered street parking are donated to local charities through the Change for Charity initiative, which also supports community events hosted at Watters Creek.
