While in-person interactions like hugs and happy moments are irreplaceable, here are 10 excellent apps, devices, and online services to help you maintain connections with your loved ones while safely staying at home.
Tools to Help You Keep in Touch
With a range of free video chat apps and web platforms available, there are many ways to communicate with family and friends. Here are a few we recommend:
-
WhatsApp: Accessible on various devices globally, WhatsApp is an excellent platform for messaging, calling, or video chatting. It features built-in encryption for privacy. However, when making voice or video calls, keep in mind that WhatsApp uses cell data if not connected to Wi-Fi, and you cannot call landline numbers. Download WhatsApp for iOS or Android, or use it on your computer.
-
Skype: After creating an account, Skype allows you to send messages, pictures, and videos to other Skype users. You can also call non-Skype contacts, including landlines; however, this service incurs a fee. Download Skype for iOS or Android, or use it on your computer.
-
Zoom: Originally a business tool, Zoom has become popular for casual video chats, allowing up to 100 participants and the ability to set fun backgrounds. Note that a free account has a 40-minute limit. Pro plans, priced similarly to a Netflix subscription, can extend your chat time. Download Zoom for iOS or Android, or use it on your computer.
- Google Hangouts: Most people with Gmail accounts can start and join video calls on Google Hangouts. The benefit is that there’s no time limit for chats, though only 10 participants are allowed. Download Google Hangouts for iOS or Android, or use it on your computer.
Devices That Make Loved Ones Feel Closer
While apps and platforms are fantastic, some devices can enhance personal connections. Here are some devices that can help:
-
Alexa Devices: The Echo Show, Amazon’s smart display, enables hands-free video calls with other Echo Show users or anyone with the Alexa app. It can display your favorite photos, nurturing a connection throughout the day. Additionally, Echo devices support an Alexa Drop In feature for voice calls, similar to walkie-talkies, between different homes.
- Facebook Portal: Facebook’s smart display allows video chats with friends via Facebook Messenger. Initially met with privacy concerns, it’s now praised for its ease of use. With options for virtual masks and fun backgrounds, Facebook Portal provides an enjoyable experience for families. You can also use it to make WhatsApp video calls since Facebook owns that service.
Online Services That Help You Hang Out
Video chatting is enjoyable, but sometimes you want to engage in activities with friends. If you have a system for playing games through video calls, here are some online services that can enhance your experience:
-
Netflix Party: This free Google Chrome extension synchronizes playback and includes a group chat feature, making it easy and fun to watch movies and shows with friends. It works only on Chrome browsers for desktops and laptops. If you have a Chromecast, you may cast your screen to your TV.
-
Steam: Home to over 30,000 games and 90 million active users, Steam provides social features like friends lists and in-game chat. Without a subscription fee, it’s a perfect option for those who want to play games together, regardless of budget. Steam’s Remote Play Together feature allows you to share a game in real-time with up to four friends.
- Collaborative Spotify Playlists: Enjoying music together is another great way to connect. Spotify enables you to create and share collaborative playlists, allowing friends to add and listen to favorite songs anytime. Contribution to these playlists doesn’t need a Premium account, though free account users can only add songs via a computer. Download Spotify for iOS or Android, or use it on your computer.
