Time Passes...

by Sheryl Pidgeon | Publisher and Editor-in-Chief

My son just turned 18, he’s in his senior year, officially an adult. My 16-year-old daughter acts very grown-up. My youngest daughter, at 15, is already driving me around. Where has all the time gone? I know I sound repetitive, but seriously, where does it all disappear?

Is it true that time moves faster as we age? Certainly, it feels like a whirlwind since I tied the knot with my husband David two decades ago. From our wedding day to the rapid-fire memories of giving birth to our three wonderful children, to those “Mommy & Me” playgroups, the first day of kindergarten, trips to Lego Land, and Chuck E. Cheese birthday bashes, followed by American Girl dolls – I could list memories endlessly, just like you. It’s a treasure trove of experiences.

Fast-forwarding feels inevitable. It’s almost as if someone pressed a fast-forward button. The “middle” was filled with team sports, orthodontist visits, pool parties, making school lunches, and driver’s education. And the current of life keeps flowing. It can’t solely be my age – my kids feel it too! Weeks of school zip by, the summers disappear in a flash, birthday party plans emerge, and I’m about to send my eldest off to college.

My mother advises me to slow down and take on less. While I appreciate her wisdom, I don’t want to scale back. In fact, I want to do even more. I thrive in the hustle and bustle of family life, friendships, and working with our GLF team. Sure, I could use some extra time, but I refuse to do less just to feel like I’m achieving that.

When I graduated college and was nervous about balancing everything, my father, always one step ahead, told me, “You can have it all, just not all at once.” I understand now. It’s about pacing myself. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

GLF exists for the “sandwich generation” – those of us juggling responsibilities between our children and our parents, eager for insights that enhance both our lives. We hope the information and inspiration in this issue, and every issue, of GLF aids you on your journey.

Reach out to us with your insights and thoughts, and feel free to share your kids’ and parents’ perspectives as well. Time may be racing by, but together, let’s keep enjoying the good times!
