PREPARTICIPATION PHYSICAL EVALUATION
MEDICAL HISTORY
An athlete’s medical history serves as a crucial indicator of their risk during both training and competition. This screening medical history helps healthcare providers determine whether any further evaluation is necessary before allowing participation and includes information regarding:
• Current and previous injuries
• Signs and symptoms of concussions
• Cardiac-related questions
• Ongoing medical issues (including chronic and recent illnesses)
• Menstrual history
• Fluctuations in weight
• Medications
PREPARTICIPATION PHYSICAL EVALUATION
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
The physical examination for athletic clearance is both general and specific. Measurements such as blood pressure, resting heart rate, and body mass index help assess potential issues like hypertension, deconditioning, and malnutrition among other relevant conditions. It’s noteworthy that certain activities, such as weight lifting, can significantly elevate blood pressure, underscoring the importance of knowing an athlete’s baseline health.
Evaluating the cardiovascular system involves detailed assessments in various positions. The musculoskeletal system undergoes a thorough examination of all essential muscles and joints, extending from the neck to the toes, typically through an eleven-point assessment that may not be included in routine annual wellness checkups. Lab tests are evaluated on an individual basis and are not generally mandated for most athletes.
CLEARANCE FOR PARTICIPATION
After the athlete has been evaluated based on their medical history and the findings from the physical exam, the healthcare provider will authorize in one of three ways:
1) Cleared without restrictions
2) Cleared with specific restrictions
3) Cleared following assessment or rehabilitation for a particular condition
The latter two categories may necessitate additional testing or treatment before the athlete can return to their sport. Ensuring that your child’s preparticipation physical examination is completed well ahead of the season’s start will provide ample time to address any issues, ideally before those initial two-a-days!
