Having a pool in your backyard has been a highly sought-after residential feature for many years. You might be fortunate enough to own one, but if it’s looking outdated and you feel less enthusiastic about using it this summer, there are numerous ways to revitalize or upgrade it. If you begin soon, you will have ample time to enjoy your pool throughout the upcoming months!
Pool resurfacing
Is the surface layer of your pool peeling off? Are you starting to see the raw gunite? While unbalanced pH levels in the water can lead to this issue, it often results from years of heavy use. Once the surface starts to come off, it will continue to deteriorate and spread throughout your pool.
Over time, pools can become discolored due to minerals, chemicals, algae, or debris present in the water. If stains persist despite your cleaning efforts, resurfacing will effectively address that concern.
Resurfacing not only improves the appearance of your pool but can also remedy other problems. It repairs cracks and wear; if the surface feels rough underfoot, it’s time to consider resurfacing.
Additionally, resurfacing provides an opportunity to update the pool’s aesthetic. There are numerous color and material options available. Popular plaster choices include white plaster, QuartzScapes plaster, and StoneScapes plaster. With various tiles and aggregates, you can truly customize and enhance the beauty of your pool.
Pool tile and coping replacements
The material above the tile line that protects the pool edging is known as pool coping. This separates the pool structure from the decking and typically measures around twelve inches high. It may also be referred to as the bond beam and provides a non-slip border.
The angle of the coping aids the drainage system by directing water away from the pool toward the deck drains. Besides its functional role, coping adds a significant visual impact, serving as a frame around the pool. Choosing upgraded pool coping materials depends on your personal taste, budget, and requirements. Some popular options include:
- Oklahoma flagstone
- Travertine
- Limestone
- Lueders
- Brick
- Concrete
What signs indicate that your pool coping might need replacement or renovation? Common indicators include cracking throughout the decking. Regardless of the decking material, cracking is a strong sign that the pool coping needs replacement.
Other signs that suggest coping replacement may be necessary are broken pool tiles or deck rise. Over time, the glue holding your pool tiles can fail, leading to tile breakage. Deck rise, or deck heaving, occurs when the decking is elevated compared to the level of the pool’s top, often as a result of significant weather or temperature changes.
High-tech upgrades
Automation systems enable you to control certain pool functions from a single remote panel. This upgrade is particularly useful if you have a complex filtration system, numerous special features, or if your pool equipment is located far from your home. More convenient and efficient, these systems can be tailored to either your pool alone or both your pool and spa. While they do not manage the pool’s chemical levels, they allow you to turn features on or off and adjust settings. The popular Jandy iAquaLink system enables you to control the pool wirelessly from your smartphone, tablet, or similar device.
Installation of automation systems can be complex. Therefore, electrical work should always be handled by a professional installer. If your pool is quite basic or you prefer to avoid technology, this upgrade may not be beneficial for you.
Additional features
Incorporating luxurious features into your pool can significantly enhance its appearance and atmosphere. For instance, adding a hot tub provides both aesthetic appeal and therapeutic advantages! However, including a spa in an existing pool will require resurfacing the pool’s interior. Due to the preparations needed for this addition, the pool interior will not seal the structure or match the new hot tub, so re-plastering is necessary.
Water features present an elegant way to elevate the look of your pool, instantly making your space feel more upscale. These features add beauty and movement, with options like fountains, waterfalls, cascades, and bubblers. They also provide the soothing sound of running water, helping to relieve stress.
Remodeling or renovating a pool is not a DIY task. It’s essential to engage a reputable pool company for your renovation projects, as experienced contractors ensure proper installation. While the upfront cost may be higher, it will save you money on repairs and further renovations later on!
