Optimal Dates for Budget-Friendly Summer Escapes

Summer is the perfect opportunity for a vacation—whether you’re traveling with family or solo. To keep costs low (or at least lower), here are some important dates to remember. The key takeaway is that the best deals are often available during times when fewer people are traveling. Plus, this usually means less crowded airports.

First, let’s explore some affordable travel dates to consider, followed by specific budget-friendly days.

Affordable Flying Dates – United States

The following observations generally apply across most routes, but there is some variation. That’s why my advice for those looking for airfare is to always compare prices.

May 16: This is the final day to start your journey while benefiting from lower spring rates. Prices will rise starting May 17, so plan your departure before this date.

June 9: This marks the last day to capitalize on good fares before the peak summer travel season kicks in. Remember, you only need to leave by this date; completing the trip isn’t necessary.

Aug. 1: From this date, you’ll notice a modest decrease in weekday flight prices, although weekend fares will remain unchanged.

Aug. 23: Postponing your vacation can yield savings, as this date signals the beginning of lower fall fares for most U.S. airlines. Prices typically decrease across the board.

Affordable Flying Dates – Europe

The most favorable dates for European travel reflect the best days for the U.S. as well.

May 16: This is the last chance to book cheaper spring fares. After May 17, prices will jump as Europe enters its peak travel season.

Aug. 23: Prices are likely to decline, with another drop expected in mid to late October.

Affordable Flying Dates – Asia

May 31: This is the last day to take advantage of pre-summer lower fares.

Aug. 1: Anticipate a slight price drop on this day.

Aug. 23: A more significant price reduction can be expected on this date.

Sept. 12: There may be another minor fare decrease, but this will differ by airline.

Affordable Days to Fly – Domestic and International

Generally, flying on weekdays tends to be cheaper than weekend flights. However, three specific days are often the most budget-friendly for U.S. flights: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

This is a great opportunity to rethink the conventional Friday to Sunday getaway. Consider departing on a Tuesday and returning on Saturday, or travel on just one of these ‘cheaper days’ to still enjoy significant savings.
