Nourish Together: Combat Hunger with Family Dinners

By zp7op | Contributor

Amid busy daily routines and diverse dietary requirements, numerous families confront the challenging question: “What do we want for dinner?” Conversely, millions struggle each night to provide meals, affecting around 1 in 8 children, as reported by Feeding America.

You can contribute to helping those in need through the “Fight Hunger, Serve Hope” cause program by Safeway and Albertsons. This initiative aims to combat hunger in local communities during summer when families with school-aged children experience greater food insecurity. The company’s private label will donate one meal for each O Organics® item sold, totaling up to $7 million and providing the equivalent of 28 million meals. The donations will support Nourishing Neighbors, a program run by the Albertsons Companies Foundation, funding grants to ensure at-risk youth have access to healthy meals over the summer break.

“While summer brings excitement for many students, it also highlights the harsh reality for millions of children who lose access to the school meals they rely on during the school year,” stated Jennifer Saenz, EVP and chief merchandising officer at Albertsons Companies. “As a company, we are dedicated to creating a positive impact in the lives of children in need. For the first time, we’re making it easier for our customers to engage in this mission by linking every purchase of our O Organics brand to hunger relief initiatives in our communities.”

After the campaign concludes, families eager to assist in their communities can contribute in various ways.

Donate Canned Goods

When schools resume, many classrooms organize canned food drives for diverse causes, fulfilling dual roles of aiding those in need and teaching children about the importance of kindness. Sending your child to school with canned food not only helps others but also fosters a sense of responsibility in them.

Volunteer at a Food Pantry

While sharing resources like canned goods can profoundly impact communities, local food pantries also require eager volunteers to help sort and distribute food, among other tasks. Volunteering can provide a fresh perspective as you connect with fellow volunteers, enhance the lives of community members, and develop new skills.
