Love is All You Need

The Gift of Insight

At 17, my father gifted me a book titled Love is Letting Go of Fear. At that time, I was struggling to navigate family dynamics, academics, and life’s challenges. In hindsight, I acknowledge that many teenagers face similar struggles, but I felt particularly alone back then. Although I was hesitant about self-help literature, I had recently discovered that my dad possessed wisdom, prompting me to give it a try.

Understanding Emotions

The author, Dr. Gerald G. Jampolsky, defined life through two primary emotions: love and fear. He argued that love is our inherent state, while fear is a construct of our minds. The premise suggests that releasing fear allows love to prevail. This concept of “Attitudinal Healing” was progressive in the 80s, much like my father’s groundbreaking 40-pound car phone and his towering quadrophonic speakers in our sunken living room adorned with orange shag carpeting. The idea of letting go of fear felt equally innovative.

Learning Sustainable Habits

That summer, my father and I also enrolled in Weight Watchers, which resonated with me: consume balanced, low-fat portions and track progress through weekly support meetings. Similar to Jampolsky’s teachings, these principles proved lasting. I have carried the lessons from that book and our three-month Weight Watchers journey throughout my life. However, knowing how to do something doesn’t guarantee doing it. Staying on track is challenging, especially when life gets complicated, and I have a fondness for carbohydrates.

Facing Everyday Challenges

How can we remain steadfast when life inundates us with unexpected challenges and turmoil? How can we handle our own “issues” while teaching our children to surpass our experiences so they can uplift future generations?
