How can we maintain a positive outlook during these challenging times?
Each day presents us with new obstacles, whether they are situational, physical, or emotional. We hear heartbreaking stories of individuals suffering serious illnesses due to the Coronavirus. We empathize with those who have suddenly found themselves unemployed. We witness our economy spiraling downward in a matter of days. It can often feel like there is no hope in sight, but this is the moment we must dig deep and hold onto hope more than ever. It’s essential for our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being, not only for ourselves but for those around us.
What steps can we take as we grapple with fear, anxiety, and concern due to the current state of the world? We focus on what we can control… we strive for our peace and hold onto hope.
Here’s a guide to maintaining hope during this period:
- Mindset
Pay attention to your initial five minutes in the morning. What is your first thought upon waking?
I have to check the news?
I should… look at… my messages?
How did my kids sleep last night?
Where’s the remote control?
FIGHT to establish a hopeful mindset for the day. Replace all other morning thoughts with this singular thought… I am hopeful that today will be a fulfilling day.
Your first five minutes set the tone for the rest of your day. Choose to remain hopeful today, regardless of circumstances.
A positive mindset fosters hope.
- Exercise
Exercising early in the day is an excellent way to alleviate stress, sort through your thoughts, and kickstart your endorphins for the day. You are also more likely to maintain a healthy diet throughout the day. It’s easier to cultivate hope when you’ve physically relieved stress.
Self-care nurtures hope.
- Gratitude, Gifts, Grace
Challenge yourself to identify all the things you are grateful for, recognize the gifts you have received, and accept the grace available to you.
Throughout the day, take note of what you are thankful for… from having a functioning washer and dryer to the opportunity to spend quality time with your children.
Acknowledge the strengths and talents you possess—whether that be leadership, service, creativity, or organizational skills. Focus on utilizing these during this time. (16personalities.com is a helpful resource.)
Embrace the grace in your life—from your ability to forgive to your capacity to love deeply.
Recognizing gratitude, embracing your gifts, and living a grace-filled life cultivates hope.
- Perspective
It’s easy to get caught up in the narratives from the media, leaders, and those around us. Evaluate your perspective. If you find yourself overwhelmed by worry, strive to realign your viewpoint and seek hope. Remember that this situation will improve. Tomorrow will bring new opportunities. You will be alright. This is a chance to learn and grow, not a moment to succumb to anxiety.
A healthy perspective nurtures hope for the future.
- Play… yes, play!
In difficult times, we can forget to find joy in our lives. Look for moments in your day to be playful—dance, laugh, and let your inner child come out. Recall the days when you would run freely without the concern of being observed. The playful spirit that might have played tricks on a sibling. The carefree youth who joyfully engaged in crafts, puzzles, and cooking.
A playful spirit not only fosters fun but also breeds hope.
