Holiday Heart Health Essentials

The holiday season brings joy through food, drinks, presents, and family time for many people nationwide. However, amidst the festivities, heart health can sometimes take a back seat.

Research indicates a spike in heart-related problems and fatalities during the last week of December. A study featured in the American Heart Association journal, “Circulation,” reveals that December 25 sees the highest number of cardiac deaths, followed closely by December 26 and January 1.

“The holidays can be a hectic and often stressful period for many,” stated American Heart Association Chief Clinical Science Officer Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D., M.S., FAHA. “With routines thrown off, we tend to indulge more while exercising and relaxing less. Many people also get less sleep and face increased stress. Although the exact reasons for more heart attacks during this time are unclear, we should recognize that these elements can compound, elevating the risk of serious cardiac events.”

Recognizing this yearly trend and adopting a few key heart-healthy practices can be life-saving. Consider these recommendations  from Dr. Elkind and the professionals at the American Heart Association.

  • Recognize Symptoms and Act Quickly. Heart attack symptoms differ between men and women, but early recognition is vital. Always call 9-1-1 for immediate help. The earlier treatment starts, the higher the chances for survival and minimizing heart damage.
  • Celebrate Moderately. Maintaining a healthy diet during the holidays doesn’t mean you have to forgo enjoyment. It’s possible to make smart food choices by managing sodium intake and finding healthier alternatives, enabling you to feel your best while enjoying holiday treats in moderation.
  • Show Yourself Kindness. Amidst the fast pace of the season, prioritize self-care. Engaging in enjoyable activities like reading, meditating, or playing with pets can effectively alleviate stress from family gatherings, financial worries, busy schedules, travel, and other holiday-related pressures.
  • Stay Active. While holiday preparations might push exercise aside, remaining active is crucial. Get inventive with your movement—consider family walks or energetic games with loved ones to keep everyone engaged.
  • Adhere to Your Medication Routine. Amidst the busyness, some people may neglect their medications, forgetting them at home or failing to renew prescriptions. Use a medication chart as a helpful reminder, and keep track of your blood pressure regularly.
