Summer brings sunshine and a wealth of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities with family and friends. While these delightful moments are what make the season memorable, prolonged sun exposure can take a toll on your skin if you don’t take the right precautions.
Whether you’re enjoying outdoor dining, swimming, cycling, or just lounging in the sun, it’s crucial to take care of your body so you can relish in the summer warmth throughout the season.
Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is vital for overall well-being and helps maintain your skin’s moisture levels. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, particularly as temperatures rise and you spend more time outside. Additionally, consuming hydrating fruits and vegetables can fend off mild dehydration, which can lead to fatigue. For instance, watermelon, which is composed of 92% water, can effectively help replenish lost fluids.
Prioritize Skin Protection
Regardless of whether you’ll be in the sunlight for a brief or extended period, protecting your skin by applying sunscreen is essential. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher on days when the UV index is 3 or above. Alternatively, consider wearing light and airy clothing that covers a significant portion of your skin while still being comfortable in hot weather.
Refresh Your Face
Your face, as one of the most sun-exposed areas, needs particular attention during the sunny months. An all-natural DIY facial can provide a brightening and hydrating treat for yourself.
For a refreshing glow at home, mix 2 tablespoons of Greek yogurt (to exfoliate and purify) with 1 tablespoon of watermelon juice (for hydration). Apply this mask to your face and neck for 10 minutes, then rinse off and gently dry your skin.
Keep Your Whole Body in Mind
Although your face will typically receive a lot of sun exposure, don’t forget the rest of your body. A gentle body scrub can help achieve a radiant look while adding a pleasant, fruity aroma.
To exfoliate and polish your skin, combine 1 1/2 cups of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, and 1/4 cup of watermelon juice. Optionally, you can add 1 teaspoon of microplaned watermelon rind zest and 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
Store the scrub in an airtight container for up to one week. During your shower, gently massage a handful of the scrub onto your skin, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry.

Subtle Care for Sensitive Skin
For some individuals, summer skin care can be straightforward by following a basic routine. However, those with sensitive skin may require extra care. Here’s a calming, cleansing remedy you can make at home to moisturize and tone sensitive skin.

Watermelon Mask and Toner
Watermelon Banana Mask:
1 tablespoon watermelon juice
2 tablespoons ripe mashed banana
Watermelon Toner:
1/3 cup watermelon juice
1 tablespoon witch hazel
1 teaspoon distilled water
To create the watermelon banana mask: In a bowl, mix the watermelon juice (for hydration) with the mashed banana (to reduce inflammation). Apply the mask to your face and leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Pat dry.
To prepare the watermelon toner: In a small bowl, combine the watermelon juice with witch hazel and water. Apply the toner to a clean face and let it sit for 2-3 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Pat dry.
Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
