Adolescent Hormones and Cardiovascular Wellness

If you’re a parent of a teenager, you’re likely aware of the mood swings that hormone fluctuations can trigger. You’re familiar with their impact on temperament, but have you considered how they affect heart health?

While hormonal shifts and rapid growth may lead to temporary alterations in cholesterol levels or blood pressure, these hormone changes do not pose significant health risks, according to Dr. Stephen Daniels, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

The health of a teenager is influenced by a combination of psychological, physical, and environmental changes, as well as behaviors and decision-making. With new experiences and pressures, many adolescents seek peer acceptance, which can impact their health choices. Decisions regarding smoking, diet, and physical activity are crucial.

Smoking

Addressing smoking is one of the most vital health issues for teenagers. Statistics reveal that 68 percent of adult smokers started this habit by age 18, and nearly 3,900 adolescents under 18 try their first cigarette each day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s important to discuss smoking with your children. Your influence is significant—if you smoke, your child is more likely to adopt the habit as well. Consider learning more about quitting smoking for your own health.

Physical Activity

Physical activity is another essential aspect of teen health. Research indicates that children’s levels of physical activity often decline during adolescence, with this trend being particularly concerning for teenage girls, according to Dr. Daniels.

Encourage your child to engage in physical activities both at home and with friends. Explore ways to integrate heart-healthy practices for the entire family.

Diet

As teenagers spend increased time away from home, their peers often exert a stronger influence on their eating habits. In the United States, approximately one in three children is overweight or obese. Factors such as dining out, larger portion sizes, and reduced physical activity contribute to this issue. A child who is overweight has a 70 to 80 percent chance of remaining overweight into adulthood. Establishing good dietary habits at home is crucial.

What can you do?

Don’t underestimate your role as a parent, even if your teenagers seem indifferent. Discuss the significance of a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and the negative impact of smoking. Create a supportive and healthy environment. If you smoke, consider quitting. Share healthy meals as a family and engage in physical activities together, equipping your teenager with positive habits for the future.
