Current Influenza Activity

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently reporting significant levels of influenza and flu-like illnesses throughout the United States. According to their latest findings, there have been an estimated 9.7 million diagnosed cases of the flu this season, with 32 children and 4,800 adults having succumbed to the illness.

Importance of a Healthy Immune System

Libby Richards, an associate professor of nursing specializing in public health at Purdue University’s School of Nursing, emphasizes that having a robust immune system can aid in combatting the flu virus and other infections if exposed.

“There are many factors regarding immunity that we cannot control, but there are several actions we can take to help sustain a strong immune system to care for ourselves,” Richards states.

Tips to Strengthen Your Immune System

To maintain a healthy immune system, consider the following suggestions:

  • Get adequate sleep each night
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables
  • Stay hydrated
  • Follow physical activity guidelines
  • Avoid smoking
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Manage stress levels

Richards advises, “When feeling unwell, along with when you’re healthy, seven to nine hours of sleep is recommended. In addition to ensuring sufficient sleep while sick, it’s crucial to rest during the day and steer clear of overexertion.”

Exercise Considerations During Cold and Flu Season

“Be safe and responsible if you enjoy working out at the gym during this cold and flu season. If you have a productive cough, please consider staying home to prevent spreading germs,” says Richards. “If you have mild cold symptoms but feel up to exercising, you can proceed as it might help you feel better; however, consider lessening the intensity or duration of your workout. On the contrary, if you experience fatigue, body aches, or stomach issues, it would be best to remain at home and rest, as exercise could elevate your risk of injury.”

Managing Germs at Home with Children

It can be difficult to control germs in a household with children.

“Children touch numerous surfaces, which is a significant way for germs to spread. They also often lack an understanding of ‘personal space’ and invade each other’s faces frequently,” Richards notes. “Parents, teachers, and caregivers should demonstrate proper handwashing and cough etiquette consistently throughout the year, not just during flu season.”

Sanitizing and Hygiene Practices

Richards recommends regularly using sanitizing wipes on frequently touched items that children come into contact with, such as remote controls, mobile devices, tablets, toys, doorknobs, and faucets.

“As much as we enjoy showing affection through kisses, remember that it’s possible to transmit the flu one to three days before symptoms appear,” Richards warns.
