A Celebration of Happiness
Because I’m joyful
Clap along if you feel free and unencumbered
Because I’m joyful
Clap along if you believe happiness is genuine
Because I’m joyful
Clap along if you understand what happiness means to you
Because I’m joyful
Clap along if you feel that’s what you wish to do
Who doesn’t feel a lift in their spirit when Pharrell Williams’ anthem, “Happy,” comes on? To the dismay of my children, I often can’t resist showcasing my best dance moves, reminiscent of Elaine from Seinfeld.
We frequently send warm wishes for happy birthdays, joyful new years, and more. We desire happiness for ourselves and those we care about. Yet, why does happiness seem elusive for some? Why do some individuals perceive the glass as half empty while others see it as half full?
In his popular talk show, The Happiness Hour, and in his acclaimed book, Happiness is a Serious Problem, Dennis Prager—whose thought-provoking articles can also be found on goodLIFEfamilymag.com—states that happiness is not just a virtue; it’s a moral duty. His perspective suggests that happiness enhances our character and positively influences the lives of those around us, creating a nurturing environment for their own happiness.
However, attaining happiness is no easy task. Prager asserts that it involves a continuous practice of acknowledging our blessings and relinquishing the expectation that life should always be ideal. He contends that many today adopt a victim mentality; the path to fulfilling one’s desires lies in taking accountability for one’s own life rather than attributing blame to others.
Around us, there are individuals battling depression and mental health challenges; these factors present different hurdles. We also know of those who have faced unimaginable hardships yet managed to find the strength to persist. These brave souls emerge from their deepest struggles to discover a silver lining. They embody Prager’s belief. Rather than feeling wronged by life, they achieve a breakthrough towards happiness by engaging in actions that positively impact those around them. These inspiring individuals are the reason for our Very Inspiring Parent (VIP) Award, which honors those whose determination, integrity, and bravery encourage others to adopt the same values and prioritize their families and communities.
My father often remarks that I came into this world with a smile. I suppose I was aware I had reasons to be cheerful. As we celebrate our fifth year of publishing Good Life Family, I’m delighted to share stories of those who inspire, enlighten, and empower. I’m grateful to be surrounded by colleagues and partners on this passionate journey. I cherish remarkable friendships that have endured for over forty years. Above all, I’m grateful for my wonderful family, who motivates me to dance every single day. Now that’s a reason to applaud.
