Hormonal Changes and Hot Flashes

Expert Insights on Menopause

By Alicia Wanek

A recent meme on a Pinterest board humorously stated, “When I asked for a smoking hot body, menopause was not what I had in mind.” Menopause is an inevitable phase, but Dr. Katrina Walsh, an obstetrician/gynecologist, emphasizes that “this is the time of life to be enjoying yourself.” However, she acknowledges that “the change” comes with its own set of challenges.

Understanding the Onset of Menopause

According to Dr. Walsh, the typical onset age for menopause is between 52 and 55, though symptoms of perimenopause can start as early as a decade prior. During this time, women might experience hormonal fluctuations while still having monthly cycles. Several factors influence when menopause begins, including:
a) your diet,
b) your level of exercise, and
c) your mother’s experience with menopause.

Women Are Healthier Than Ever

“These days, 50 is the new 40. Women are healthier and living longer, so there’s a lot of life to live after menopause is over.”
— Dr. Katrina Walsh

Common Symptoms of Menopause

All women will face this life stage, and many symptoms can be quite challenging. Dr. Walsh notes that she frequently encounters women with issues such as reduced libido, vaginal dryness, weight gain, hot flashes, and irritability, which can lead to feeling “short” with others. The pressing question is how to navigate this transition as smoothly as possible.

“It all comes down to how we handle it,” Dr. Walsh asserts. Attitude plays a key role, but there are numerous medical options available. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains the most common solution.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Options

Dr. Walsh explains that our bodies require estrogen and progesterone, and HRT has significantly improved in helping maintain this balance. The positive aspects of HRT include protecting bone density and enhancing the elasticity of the vagina, bladder, and rectum. The downside is a 0.08 percent increase in breast cancer risk, a potential heightened risk of ovarian cancer, and an increased chance of heart attack or stroke with prolonged use. Creams or patches generally have fewer side effects compared to oral HRT treatments but might be less effective. A new, not yet FDA-approved treatment option mentioned by Dr. Walsh is the testosterone pellet. While it can boost libido, it may have side effects including acne, hair loss, and an increased risk of blood clots.

Physical Changes During Menopause

Hormonal changes can also trigger physical modifications. For instance, metabolism typically slows by 30-33% during menopause, causing many women to experience unexpected weight gain even when their diet hasn’t changed. Additionally, some symptoms are less frequently discussed. Recently, laser treatments have become available to help women with elasticity issues “down there.” Various creams and suppositories, both prescription and over-the-counter, can address dryness that may lead to discomfort during intercourse. Supplements such as calcium and magnesium can aid in improving mood and alleviating constipation or bloating. It’s important to consult your doctor and discuss all your symptoms. We all want to feel desirable, regardless of age, and there may be solutions available.

Embracing Menopause with Positivity

“Menopause is a wonderful time for women,” Dr. Walsh reminds us, “because they no longer have to worry about periods and pregnancy.” Today, 50 truly seems to be the new 40. Women are enjoying healthier and longer lives, meaning there’s so much to experience after menopause. “I don’t want women to be defined by their age. I want them to be recognized for their capabilities, and I believe we continue to improve with time,” she states. Amen to that!
