Mosquitoes: A Major Threat to Public Health

By Jamie Lober

According to the World Health Organization, mosquitoes rank among the deadliest creatures on the planet. “The mosquito acts as a disease vector; it does not get sick from the disease itself but transmits it from one host to another,” explained Mark Kellner, owner of Texas Mosquito Control, who has focused his career on halting the spread of illnesses such as Zika virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, Dengue fever, and malaria.

The issue of mosquitoes has been persistent for centuries. “As reported by the Centers for Disease Control, from 2002 onward, Texas has seen 5,412 cases of West Nile virus resulting in 284 fatalities,” Kellner noted. With an average of 18 deaths annually in Texas, the situation shows no signs of improvement anytime soon. Therefore, mosquito prevention is crucial to safeguard your family’s health.

Effective Mosquito Prevention Tips

  • Use an EPA-registered mosquito repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants to minimize skin exposure
  • Avoid outdoor activities during the evening when mosquitoes are most active
  • Ensure door screens are intact and well-maintained
  • Eliminate sources of standing water

One option to enhance your defense against mosquitoes is to install a mosquito misting system. “This provides comprehensive protection for outdoor spaces around your home; it automatically sprays at certain times to eliminate existing mosquitoes and deters new ones from entering,” Kellner stated. Professional installation and maintenance of the misting system are recommended bi-monthly throughout the March to October season. Maintenance includes inspecting and testing the lines as well as replenishing the active ingredient in the tank.

Another innovative solution for mosquito control is a new trapping system developed with assistance from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “We can set up a network of traps designed for female mosquitoes to lay their eggs in. These traps contain a growth regulator that allows the eggs to hatch, but prevents the nymphs from maturing into mosquitoes,” Kellner explained. “The more traps installed, the greater the number of females trapped, thus helping to reduce the overall mosquito population in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.” This system is regarded as highly advanced and is exclusive to pest control companies, as it requires specialized training for installation and upkeep.

“I strive to lead in innovation at Texas Mosquito Control to ensure the best service and care for our clients and the community in DFW,” Kellner remarked.
