Healing Paws: The Soulful Impact of Animals on Humanity

It’s no sacrifice at all.
– Elton John

My youngest daughter chose our dog and named her Posh, inspired by the pop group, the Spice Girls. Posh was a miniature schnauzer who was full of energy. After my daughter went off to college, she became my wife’s and my dog. Although she tested my patience at times, especially as she grew older and became incontinent, I cared for her day after day until we had to say goodbye. Her suffering became unbearable, and she was 18 years old. When my daughter returned from college, we arranged for a vet to come to our home to help her cross the rainbow bridge. My daughter was visibly upset, and I found myself crying uncontrollably, overwhelmed by grief for a dog who had driven me nuts. Why did I feel such sorrow?

The Need for Animal Companions

Animals provide comfort and support during difficult times. A while back, I took my daughters to see the movie My Dog Skip. By the end of the film, I was in tears, embarrassing my girls as I sobbed openly in the theater! But why do these stories touch us so profoundly? Whether it’s dogs, horses, or even pigs in Charlotte’s Web, these animals resonate with us on a deeper level, fostering love and peace within us. They offer companionship and serve essential roles in law enforcement and the military, illustrating the significance of our bond with them. Through these connections, we not only receive help but also emotional nurturing. Our friendships with animals enrich our lives and are crucial for our well-being.

The Joy Pets Bring to Children

Animals create joy in the lives of our children. I recently watched a video showcasing children receiving their first pets. The excitement, joy, and happiness were a delight to observe, with kids hugging and exuberantly engaging with their new friends, some even shedding tears of joy. Pets provide a unique kind of deep happiness. The saying goes, “A dog is man’s best friend,” which holds true for women and children alike. Our pets can teach children important lessons about friendship, care, and even about being active and joyful. In an age dominated by technology, they encourage kids to play outside and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Perhaps they even remind adults to revel in playfulness.

Lessons Learned from Our Pets

Lastly, there’s a profound lesson we learn from pets—loss and grief. The reality is that our animal companions will likely leave us first. Eventually, we will have to part ways forever. This experience with grief can transform us as individuals. When Posh passed away, I was taken aback by the depth of my sorrow. Despite the challenges of caring for her as she aged—such as dealing with her incontinence—her passing triggered an emotional response that exposed my vulnerability and capacity for deep feelings. It even led me to reflect on the larger themes of loss, including that of a significant other. After grieving, I found solace in the joy Posh brought into our lives. The time and effort devoted to her care was truly no sacrifice.

Considering Pet Adoption

Should you bring a pet into your family? Research supports the benefits, and psychology advocates for it as well. However, it’s essential to consider your family’s ability to commit to another living being. A pet requires quality time and attention, and it’s crucial to assess whether your busy lifestyle can accommodate this responsibility. If you conclude that your family is ready, then embracing a new animal friend could bring an abundance of joy into your lives.
