Harmony in the World… Happiness in Your Heart

by Sheryl Lilly Pidgeon

The Value of Excitement versus Happiness
“Excitement is a wonderful and essential part of life; without it, life would feel incomplete. However, true happiness—genuine happiness—is something else entirely; it is both calmer and more fulfilling.” This is the perspective of Harvard-educated Ph.D. and life coach, Martha Beck.

“Genuine joy,” she explains, “is devoid of the extreme highs and lows associated with a life full of excitement. It resembles a tranquil landscape, populated by calm thoughts and emotions. In fact, it can seem so serene that, in our adrenaline-driven culture, it appears rather dull.”

Finding Balance in Life
As I grow older, I find myself increasingly aligned with this viewpoint. I often share the cake and frosting analogy with my children, illustrating how life and relationships resemble a cake: the foundation is crucial, yet any cake is enhanced by frosting. Striking the right balance, however, is the challenge. Too little frosting can leave you wanting, while an excess of it (although delightful at first) can lead to feelings of overwhelm.

Navigating Instant Gratification
How do we prevent ourselves from overindulging in today’s world of instant gratification? Excitement surrounds us, amplified by the constant barrage of action and adventure from mainstream and social media. It’s no surprise that creating a sense of peace in our lives—and in the lives of our children—can be difficult. In a rapid-paced and chaotic environment, it’s easy to dive straight into the tumult. Yet, there is great value in occasionally slowing down and savoring the joy that exists around us.

This holiday season, I wish you and your loved ones the gifts of peace and joy, along with just the right amount of cake and frosting.
