**Reflections on A Gentleman in Moscow**
I recently completed reading *A Gentleman in Moscow* by Amor Towles. The narrative follows one man’s journey through the chaotic terrain of 20th-century Russia, imbued with philosophical insights expressed so beautifully that you can’t help but read them aloud to yourself—and later share them with anyone nearby. The protagonist undergoes a significant transformation, discovering solace in friendship, history, fine wine, and fatherhood. My book club unanimously adored this exquisitely written story filled with themes of honor, intelligence, and bravery, perfectly balanced with just the right touch of humor to make it an enthralling read.
**A Favorite Passage**
In one of my favorite excerpts, Towles articulates, “our lives are steered by uncertainties, many of which are disruptive or even daunting; but that if we persevere and remain generous at heart, we may be granted a moment of lucidity—a moment in which all that has happened to us suddenly comes into focus as a necessary course of events, even as we find ourselves on the threshold of a bold new life that we have been meant to lead all along.”
I have often imparted this idea to my children, who are now young adults. Life offers no guarantees. The journey to happiness is fraught not only with unexpected twists and turns but also with numerous obstacles, setbacks, and stop signs. By the time they completed high school, they had encountered a significant amount of hardship. However, experiencing deep sorrow prompts us to communicate, to share our innermost feelings, to cultivate resilience, and to commit to living with greater intention. I am continually impressed not only by their unique capabilities but also by their strength to progress *forward* despite unavoidable difficulties, setbacks, and losses. With determination, bravery, compassion, and a generous sprinkle of humor guiding their path, they are bound to embark on a fulfilling and enriching journey. I take pride in who they ARE and am eager to see who they will BECOME.

**Editor’s Note**
I penned this column last month before the pandemic profoundly affected our world, and in retrospect, it feels almost surreal how unpredictable life truly is. It emphasizes the need to support our children—and each other—through this challenging time. I wish us all safe passage.
