Caramel Skillet Apple Pie - Good Life Family Magazine

By Culinary.net | Contributor

Although apple pie is a classic seasonal dessert, you can elevate it with a unique twist by making this skillet version. Simply mix Honeycrisp apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice, then layer them between two pie crusts simmering in a thin layer of brown sugar and cinnamon, finishing it off with a drizzle of caramel sauce for a wonderfully gooey treat.

Skillet Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce

4 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored and sliced

1/4 cup sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon, divided

1 tablespoon lemon juice

6 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup, plus 2 teaspoons, brown sugar

2 refrigerated pie crusts

2 teaspoons whipping cream

Caramel sauce

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl, mix the apples, sugar, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice until the apples are thoroughly coated. Set this mixture aside.

In a 10-inch oven-safe nonstick skillet, melt the butter. Add 1/4 cup of brown sugar and the remaining cinnamon, stirring until well combined. Allow this to boil for 5 to 8 minutes.

In the same skillet, place one pie crust over the brown sugar mixture. Layer the apple mixture on top of the pie crust. Cover the apples with the second pie crust, cutting slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Brush the top crust with whipping cream and sprinkle it with the remaining brown sugar.

Bake in the oven for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the crust turns a golden brown.

Finish by drizzling with caramel sauce.
