We often hear the saying “stop and smell the roses,” which reminds us to pause and enjoy the beauty and simplicity of our surroundings, such as a flowering garden nearby. This expression also highlights how natural fragrances in our environment can enhance relaxation and lift our spirits. Our sense of smell is a readily accessible tool for alleviating tension and anxiety.
This notion contributes to the booming perfume industry, valued at 72 billion dollars, alongside the more than one billion dollar aromatherapy sector. From massage oils to incense and fashionable perfumes, countless delightful scents are available to help us feel more content and serene. While it’s easy to acquire these fragrances commercially, exploring and sharing natural scents with our children can be enjoyable. Below are scientifically recognized natural fragrances known for their calming effects.
Lavender
Lavender is widely regarded as the most soothing aroma. Extracted from lavender flowers, this oil is known for its calming effects, helping both the body and mind to unwind. Its antioxidant properties can reduce stress hormone levels and ease anxiety and depression. Consider visiting a garden filled with lavender or planting some at home. Lavender is available in various forms, including essential oils, bath products, lotions, teas, and more. When your children feel anxious or have difficulty sleeping, try using lavender spray for anxiety relief or applying lavender lotion to help them relax.
Jasmine
Another floral fragrance, jasmine, is celebrated for its mood-enhancing properties. A study from 2010 indicated that jasmine’s scent promotes alertness and reduces negative feelings. Its uplifting aroma is often used to calm nerves and combat depression, fostering feelings of confidence and optimism. Consider growing jasmine plants or using jasmine-scented aromatherapy oils to enjoy this uplifting fragrance.
Pine
The scent of pine trees is known for its stress-relieving qualities. A Japanese study revealed that participants who walked through a pine forest reported significantly less stress and depression. If you’re near a pine forest, take your family for a refreshing hike and inhale the pine aroma. If not, plan a trip to experience it firsthand, or use pine-scented aromatherapy oils in your home.
Freshly-Cut Grass
The scent of freshly-mown grass is something we can all appreciate! Research has shown that this smell can boost happiness levels, perhaps due to associations with joyful memories of outdoor play. Additionally, a chemical released by recently-cut grass has been linked to increased feelings of joy and relaxation. Encourage your family to enjoy time outside by mowing the lawn or exploring the neighborhood for that fresh cut grass aroma.
Rosemary
Moving on to culinary herbs, rosemary is linked to positive emotional well-being and can help to lower cortisol levels. Be sure to keep rosemary in your spice collection and let your children experience its calming fragrance whenever they’re feeling restless.
Citrus
The scent of citrus fruits, such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits, is great for alleviating anger and anxiety while providing an energy boost. There are numerous ways to incorporate the aroma of citrus into your daily life:
- Visit a supermarket and allow your children to choose lemons and other citrus fruits to smell and touch.
- If you can, plant citrus trees in your backyard; we have a lemon tree at home, and my kids enjoy picking and smelling the lemons.
- Buy organic citrus fruits to eat at home, and consider adding their juice to water with meals.
- Instead of traditional cleaning products, use lemon to achieve a sparkling clean home while enjoying its refreshing scent.
Vanilla
Do you prefer chocolate or vanilla? When it comes to natural fragrances, vanilla has been shown to uplift spirits. A 2004 study found that the scent of vanilla beans enhanced feelings of joy and relaxation among participants. Other research has indicated that vanilla can stabilize heart rates and lower blood pressure. Being derived from the vanilla orchid, this pleasant scent is widely available in grocery stores. Involve your children by cooking with organic vanilla extract, using vanilla-scented perfumes, or buying whole vanilla beans for an aromatic experience.
Bonus Natural Scents
One significant reason scents can alleviate stress and enhance happiness is their connection to positive memories. Each person has unique experiences linked to various aromas that evoke feelings of comfort. Some might cherish the scent of the beach as it recalls enjoyable vacations, while others may find joy in the smell of pumpkin pie associated with festive gatherings. Invite your kids to join in the fun of exploring different scents to discover which ones bring them the most joy and tranquility.
