Cold and flu season is here—it’s that dreaded time of year when body aches, fever, chills, and nasal congestion can knock you off your feet, leaving you bedridden for days.
Statistics reveal that the flu affects millions of Americans each year, causing tens of thousands of deaths and resulting in billions of dollars in medical costs and lost productivity.
“Complications from the flu can become severe,” notes Dr. Suhyun An, a regenerative medicine specialist and co-author of Demystifying Stem Cells: A Real-Life Approach to Regenerative Medicine.
“If symptoms persist for 7 to 10 days, make sure to consult your doctor. If you experience breathing difficulties, a rapid heartbeat, faintness, or other severe symptoms like a high fever, seek immediate medical attention.”
Dr. An suggests ways to prevent your symptoms from escalating. For a quicker recovery and to feel better, she offers several natural remedies for cold and flu symptoms:
1. Vitamin C
Some research suggests that vitamin C may reduce the duration of a cold and enhance your immune response. “The best source is through your diet—the fresher the food, the better,” advises Dr. An. “Good sources of vitamin C include oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruits, leafy greens, and bell peppers. Be cautious with supplements, as they can lead to stomach upset and kidney stones.”
2. Honey
Honey possesses natural antiviral and antimicrobial qualities. “Sipping honey in tea with lemon can soothe a sore throat,” Dr. An explains. “Studies indicate that honey is also an effective cough suppressant. However, honey may contain Clostridium bacteria, so it should never be given to infants under one year old, as their immune systems cannot handle it.”
3. Probiotics
These are beneficial bacteria and yeast that exist in your body, some foods, and supplements. “Probiotics can support your gut and immune health, possibly lowering your risk of upper respiratory infections,” Dr. An states. “Consider adding probiotic yogurt to your diet for a tasty and nutritious source of helpful bacteria.”
4. Aromas
“When dealing with congestion from the flu, a camphor or menthol salve applied around the nose can help clear mucus,” Dr. An suggests. “Aromatherapy oils like peppermint and eucalyptus can have a similar effect. Additionally, vapor rub can alleviate cold symptoms, particularly for children over two years old. It helps to open airways, alleviating congestion, reducing coughing, and improving sleep. This can be a safer alternative to over-the-counter cold medications for young children due to potential side effects.”
5. Chicken Soup
This well-known remedy is effective because warm liquids can help reduce mucus build-up and keep you hydrated. “Chicken soup, in particular, has anti-inflammatory properties that can ease the discomfort associated with a cold,” Dr. An advises. “Having some in the freezer or opting for canned options during flu season makes it quick to prepare and comforting to consume.”
“Colds and the flu pose annual threats, but they don’t have to debilitate you for long,” Dr. An concludes. “Natural home remedies can alleviate symptoms, allowing greater comfort and aiding in faster recovery.”
